Summer Term
Dear Parent
I hope you all had an enjoyable Easter break. The following overview of the curriculum is an indication of the range of work that the Year 5 children will be covering throughout the Summer term.
Literacy
The objectives for Literacy are taken from the Revised Framework. During the Summer term, Year 5 will be studying a range of fiction including stories from a variety of cultures and traditions and choral and performance poetry. The range of non-fiction reading and writing will be focused on various forms of persuasive writing, for example: leaflets, letters of complaint and balanced arguments. There will be an emphasis on speaking and listening throughout our work in Literacy. Sentence and word level work will continue to focus on learning, understanding and applying spelling patterns and rules and grammatical construction of sentences including punctuation.
Numeracy
We continue to work from the Revised Framework for Mathematics. The following are some of the main areas to be covered;
- Multiply & divide any positive integer up to 10000 by 10, 100 and understand the effect
- Order a given set of positive and negative integers (whole numbers)
- Use decimal notation for tenths and hundredths
- Round a number with one or two decimal places to the nearest integer
- Relate fractions to division and to their decimal representations and percentages
- Know by heart all multiplication facts up to 10x 10
- Carry out short multiplication and division of a three digit by a single digit integer
- Understand area measured in cm2 and volume measured in cm3
- Recognise parallel and perpendicular lines and properties of polygons
- Solve different types of word problems involving numbers and quantities, including time, explaining methods and reasoning
- An increased emphasis on speaking and listening
Science (including Personal, Social and Health Education)
Year 5 will be studying the Earth, Sun and Moon and Keeping Healthy (this will also include the Year 5 programme of study for Sex and Relationship Education).
Design and Technology
The children will be learning about moving models which rely on cam mechanisms. They will investigate models which use this type of mechanism and design and make their own moving model.
Art
The children will be exploring how stories have been represented in textiles in different times and cultures. They will work together to make a two or three dimensional work based on a familiar story, myth or legend.
ICT
Our topics this term are Robotics and Systems and the Moving Image. The children will have the opportunity to use a programming language to control simple physical devices. They will also have the opportunity to understand how film and animation can be used to inform, persuade and entertain and to plan and create their own film.
History
Year 5 will be studying the life of children during the Second World War and making comparisons between then and now.
PE
This term’s work for Year 5 will include:
Dance: Country Dancing
Games: The children will develop their skills and understanding of the rules of a variety of games activities including Lacrosse
Athletics: Development of skills
Swimming: Skills and techniques including safety in the water
Your child should have their PE kit in school from Monday to Friday.
Music
Year 5 will have the opportunity to explore African drumming and develop their ability to perform rhythmic patterns.
RE
The children will continue to learn about the Christian and Jewish religions, focusing on religious leadership, lifestyles and practices.
French
The children will learn to talk and write about sports, hobbies and numbers to 69.
